Doing the Penguin
I was cold and wet, due to the bush I'd just spent a few hours walking through, being soaked from a couple of days rain.
Ming my main dog was around 200 m away down the hill. Lu, Puk and Jude were with me tied to some trees, as I prepared to take a dump, break one off, lighten the load as they say, I'd stripped a few Rangiora leaves to use as toilet paper, now having spent a bit of time in Rangiora years ago, I'd come to the conclusion once in Rangiora you can't wait to get out, and once out, you'd never want to go back. So wiping your ass with Rangiora seems a fitting use ……..
Anyway I was all set, with a couple of big rocks to cover the job, I propped the gun against a nearby tree, and dropped the shorts, now on with the business, I heard some noise coming up the hill, Ming coming back most likely, then two hinds came into view stopping right in front of me, "you've got to be bloody joking", I thought, shorts around my ankles, half way through the job, gun leaning on a tree three meters away, this wasn't going to be my lucky day.
The hinds seeing me seemed to grin, as they carried on up past the dogs and away, 'Oh well', I thought, back to the job, now almost finished I heard more movement below, "probably Ming following the deer" I'm thinking, a stag came into view and stopped looking at me, I stood, he stood, I waddled across to my gun doing 'the penguin' with my shorts around my ankles, picked up the gun, loaded it and shot the stag in the front shoulder, with my new bullets the guy said would be perfect for the job………the stag bolted never to be seen again. I waddled back to my pile and proceed to put the Rangiora to use ……. pulled the shorts up as Ming arrived on the scene, then after spending some time trying to locate the stag, I thought, "bugger this were going home" for a hot shower and some dry cloths.

Walking down the hill through the bush feeling a little dejected, almost at the track when Jude, Puk and Ming bolted, Jude yapping away trail barking another deer by the sound of it, looking at the tracker I could see the dogs climbing, turning, and then come crashing past Me and Lu down towards the track and sea, bugger! I now had visions of spending the rest of the day trying to find these deer chasing mongrels.
Me & Lu soon hit the track and then the beach, looking at the tracker the deer chasing mongrels were only around the next point, as we walked around to them they appeared, after getting a telling off, with tails between their legs, we were just about to turn for home, when I noticed something out in the bay, there was a spiker (Young male deer) making a swim for it, deer are great swimmers due to their hollow hair acting like a life jacket, unlike the pig who's hair is solid.
Panic stations! I needed a boat and so took off at a run, this didn't last long and soon settled into a fast walk, all the time looking over my shoulder at the deer swimming across the bay, who soon turned around and started heading back for the beach, on I went, soon launching the dingy, the motor started, great, I was soon cruising along-side the spiker who I quickly shot through the neck, soon having him gutted and hanging in the shed.
That's the thing about going hunting, you just never know whats going to happen.
