Kauhanga bay Boar

Image
The first time I ran into the Kauhanga bay Boar I was taking a local Pommie lad Matt out for a hunt, as usually happens when you take someone out pig hunting you can’t find a pig for love nor money, this morning it seemed wasn’t going to be any different! We'd started hunting on a locals boundary, I’d been to see the fella a few weeks before to clear up any misunderstandings in-case I happened to turn up on his back door dispatching any pigs, and we agreed to split any pork in that event. But it wasn’t going to be today it seemed, as we sidled away from his place through old pig rooting under the wilding pines, five finger and Manuka. Slowly we checked out the likely spots that had been kind to me in the past, but a couple of hours later with the dogs still hanging around our feet I was ready to give it up and call it a day, but the young pom seemed fresh enough and I was determined not to have him go home thinking I was a complete fraud, or at-least try to walk the legs off hi...

Mojo

My Mojo’s back! I was starting to wonder if I’d seen my last Boar! At the beginning of the winter my main dog Lu had snapped a crucial ligament, then things went from bad to worse while I was away swanning around Vietnam, my dog sitters managed to lose the holder Puk and 18 month old pup Kai (Lu’s daughter) plus I was going to have to miss entering my favorite pig hunts this winter, including the Havlock hunt. By the way yes they do eat dogs up there, Vietnam that is! I saw a few hanging up for sale on the road side, but what really got me was the lack of cats, so with me being a big cat lover! I did a little research and yes they eat them as well, I really cracked up when I heard what they called them “Little Tiger” anyone!  Anyway I arrive home with only Lu in the kennel, she wasn’t expected to be over her operation for three months and the other two didn’t turn up till 45 days after they took off, I hadn’t expected to see the holder Puk again because before...

Your dog found it Bro, you go stick it!

Never to old Hadn’t been having much luck chasing the Pig lately, my main dog Lu snapped her crucial ligament, add to that the place is getting over-run with stinking deer, who seem intent on eating all the ground cover and just about anything else they can get at. At the moment it being the roar we have stags hanging around the back door here stinking up the place, tempting the dogs to chase them, I don’t have all the answers but it seems this latest dog whistle from the Government called “Predator Free NZ” has got some of the population falling over themselves trying to eradicate possums, rats and stoats from Aotearoa, without any plan or thought for the management of the deer and pig populations or input from the tax payers that hunt these animals. Enough of the politics and on with the hunting. Seeing as the nights were getting cooler, Me and my neighbour Pedro (Peter) had decided it was about time those boars started coming down from the tops closer to the sea, where i...
